Why Animation is Africa’s Next Big Export

Africa is ready to take the world by storm, and animation is leading the way. The animation industry in Africa is growing fast, and it’s about to become one of the biggest exports from the continent. Here’s why African animation is so important and why the world should pay attention.

A Young and Hungry Audience (in Africa and outside)

Africa has a very young population, more than half of its people are under 25 years old. This group loves stories that show their culture, language, and life and animation is perfect for telling these stories because it can bring anything to life. This young, digital-savvy audience is not only watching but sharing African animated films everywhere. In addition, in the digital world, being African is now so cool. Other countries and cultures are beginning to be intrigued by our way of life. This is a ready audience and hungry audience that we must do well to capture.

Rich and Unique Stories

Africa has so many different cultures and histories that no other place can match. These stories are waiting to be told through animation. From The Passport of Mallam Ilia, which tells a tale set in 19th-century Kano, to modern-day stories, African animators create content that is fresh, exciting, and full of life. People all over the world want to see these stories.

Training Homegrown Talent

One big challenge for African animation has been finding enough skilled animators. But this is changing fast. Magic Lab Academy, our training school, has helped train more than 80% of the animators working on our projects. By building local talent, Africa’s animation industry becomes stronger and more sustainable.

The World Is Watching

International film festivals and streaming platforms are now more interested in showing African animated films. This has opened doors to interesting partnerships like the one between Disney and Kugali which produced Iwaju.  Films like ours as well, The Passport of Mallam Ilia, we believe will open bigger doors for more African stories to reach global audiences. We are excited about the prospects for African storytelling and we believe the world is excited too.

Boosting the Economy and Creating Jobs

Animation is not just fun,  it helps the economy. Building the animation industry means jobs for artists, editors, writers, sound engineers, and many more. It attracts investment and turns Africa into a creative powerhouse that exports its culture worldwide.

Magic Carpet Studio’s Role

At Magic Carpet Studio, we are proud to be part of this exciting growth. With The Passport of Mallam Ilia and other projects, we are showing the world what West African animation can do. We train new talent, tell real African stories, and push the limits of animation. Our work helps put African animation on the global map and we take this very seriously.
